“ You don’t feel like you are where you’re supposed to be “. I heard this quote in a movie a while back and it home. The idea that we are never satisfied with where we are. There is always an inherent urge to be somewhere else.
Do you remember as a kid being in the car driving somewhere or on a plane heading somewhere and all your mind could do is wish you were there already. You wanted to be THERE so bad that you felt so dissatisfied with where you were. Not much has changed , as we still do that today but with everything in life. The unaware human walks thru life not content with their job, friends, family, social life , financial situation etc etc. We tend to always feel like we should be somewhere else , have something else , be doing something else or the always recurring I will be happy when (fill In your minds desire) . Why is that? Well it’s simple you have a modern day functioning mind that is programmed to constantly be looking ahead and not at the step you are actually taking now. That is not to say that striving to advance and excel is a negative, because it is not. Though that striving can easily take our attention away from where we are if we are not paying attention.
Once we notice that our mind has this hardwired need to not be satisfied where we actually are NOW, we can shift our perspective and bring our attention back and start appreciating the present moment. Notice the story in your mind at how it SHOULD be different and actually how all that’s doing is creating a narrative of dissatisfaction. The mind loves using worlds like SHOULD and MUST in these narratives because of the connotation of urgency that they portray. Next time your mind says it wants to be somewhere else, want something else or be doing something else, take a breath look around and appreciate the step you are taking whether it’s a pleasant one or not because this is where life actually happens. Invest your time efforts and energy in where you are and make the most of the moment in life you are actually experiencing.
What’s the point of always wanting to be somewhere else and missing where we are. Besides life happens on the journey not at the destination.
